Alamo sits toward the far end of our Hidalgo County coverage, roughly 55 miles of highway and a bit more than an hour behind the wheel from Rio Grande City. Laid out in 1909, named after the Alamo Mission in San Antonio and incorporated in 1924, it has grown into a winter-resort town ringed by RV parks, park models and mobile-home communities. The local chamber puts the seasonal crowd at about 20,000 Winter Texans, some staying up to eight months. For an HVAC crew, that means a rush of heat pump checks and repairs each fall, plus mobile-home units that sat idle all summer. Because of the drive, nearly all of our Alamo work is booked ahead.

Park models, mobile homes and grove-country houses in Alamo

Alamo counted 19,493 residents at the 2020 Census, but its population swells each winter. Resort lots are narrow, and each home tends to have a packaged unit or a small heat pump beside the skirting. Under the floor, the crossover duct that links the two halves of a double-wide can sag or pull loose, and air that should reach the bedrooms leaks out under the home.

Beyond the parks, older single-family homes sit among the vegetable farms and citrus groves the area is known for. Many still rely on electric heat strips that run a few nights a year and get forgotten until a cold front arrives. Our mobile home AC service covers the units, the ducts below the floor and the drains.

Why is fall the season to book Alamo service?

From an hour away, the smartest Alamo visit is a planned one. September through November is when we line up start-ups for homes that sat empty: coil cleaning, drain clearing, a check of heating mode and the backup strips, and a look for wasp nests or rodent damage in the cabinet. Grouping several park homes on one day keeps the trip efficient.

Repairs during the season get a booked window, often the same day when the schedule allows. Please do not count on us for the fastest response on a freezing night; plan the check early so the heat is ready before you need it.

Between Santa Ana and San Juan: Alamo's surroundings

Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1943, protects about 2,088 acres of river forest along the Rio Grande south of town and is managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, which counts nearly 500 bird species and about 300 butterfly species documented there. The refuge brings birders and other visitors to the edge of town much of the year. US-281 also runs south from Alamo toward the crossing at Nuevo Progreso. San Juan borders Alamo on the west and Donna on the east, and most residents fall within Pharr–San Juan–Alamo ISD.

What do Alamo winter residents ask us?

How early should I book a fall visit before I arrive in Alamo?

Aim for a few weeks before your arrival date. Fall is the busiest stretch for park homes, and booking early lets us group several Alamo addresses on one trip from Rio Grande City. The city promotes ten parks for winter visitors, and homes in the same park are the easiest to line up together. If the home is locked, arrange access through the park office or a neighbor and we will send a short summary after the visit.

Are heat strips enough heat for an Alamo winter?

They will keep you warm, but they are the most expensive way to do it, since resistance heat uses far more electricity than a heat pump for the same warmth. For homes occupied all winter, a heat pump with strips as backup usually costs less to run. We check both on a fall visit so the backup works on the rare hard freeze. That matters in Alamo, where some winter residents stay as long as eight months.

Do you also work on Alamo homes outside the RV parks?

Yes. Older single-family houses among Alamo's farm fields and citrus groves get the same service: AC repair, heat strip and furnace checks, and replacements. Some of those houses are decades old, so we look at the ducts and the drain as well as the outdoor unit.
