Brooks County sits about 90 minutes north of our Rio Grande City shop, so we treat it as a planned route rather than a quick call. Most of the county is open ranch land around Falfurrias, and much of our work here involves the cold rooms that hunting camps rely on each fall and the ranch-house systems that have been running for decades. If you book ahead, we can bring the right parts and fit your property into a day already set aside for the area. Breakdowns are handled as fast as distance and the schedule allow, and we will be straight about timing when you call.
Is Brooks County too far for a service call?
No, but it takes planning on both sides. Our usual route runs north on FM 755 through La Gloria to US-281 at Rachal, then up the highway toward Falfurrias. Northbound traffic on that stretch passes the Border Patrol checkpoint south of town, so we build extra time into any arrival estimate.
Before the trip, we ask for the equipment brand, its age if known, and a description of the problem. For ranch properties we also need gate details and how the road holds up after rain. Common capacitors, contactors, fan motors and controller parts ride along. If something has to be ordered, we schedule the return visit before leaving.
Sandy brush country, older ranch houses and deer camps
The county covers about 942 square miles of brushy mesquite and live oak country, created in 1911 when it was split from Starr County. Its soils run dark and loamy in places and loose and sandy in others, with scattered dunes. That sand matters for air conditioners: wind carries it into condenser fins until the coil cannot shed heat, and the compressor runs hot all summer.
Ranching and oil and gas, found here in the 1930s, still underpin the economy, and hunting is a major draw. That mix produces a particular set of buildings: headquarters houses built decades ago, bunkhouses with window units, and insulated cold rooms used hard for a few months a year.
The climate keeps those systems busy. The Handbook of Texas puts average July temperatures between 73°F and 97°F, rainfall at about 25 inches a year and the growing season at roughly 310 days. Much of the ground is nearly level and poorly drained, so water stands around slabs after a heavy rain and then dries into a crust of sand and silt. A condenser sitting low on bare ground takes both. Setting it on a raised AC condenser pad and keeping the coil clean does more for its life here than any add-on part.

Equipment we see most across Brooks County
Cold rooms and aging central systems top the list. When a ranch house needs more than a repair, our AC replacement page explains sizing and refrigerant choices, and we set up walk-in coolers and CoolBot rooms for camps.

Walk-In Coolers & CoolBot Rooms in Brooks County
Deer camps and ranch headquarters across Brooks County depend on cold rooms that must hold steady from the November rifle opener on, often miles from Falfurrias down a sandy ranch road.

A cooler that warms up with game hanging inside cannot wait for the next routine trip up US-281, so tell us the inside temperature and what the controller shows when you call.

AC Replacement in Brooks County
Many Brooks County ranch houses still run aging systems, some on R-22, and after years of blowing sand on the coil they can cost more to keep alive than to replace.

AC Maintenance in Brooks County
With July averages near 97°F and a growing season of about 310 days, cooling runs most of the year here, so a spring check catches weak capacitors before the long summer.

AC Coil Cleaning in Brooks County
Wind lifts loose sand from the county's sandy soils and isolated dunes and packs it into outdoor coils, choking airflow until the fins are washed out from the inside.

AC Condenser Pads in Brooks County
Much of the county is nearly level, poorly drained ground, so a condenser set on a raised, level pad stays out of the standing water and sand that collect after a heavy rain.

Rachal, Encino, Flowella and the US-281 corridor
Falfurrias holds most of the county's homes and businesses, while smaller places such as Encino, Flowella and Rachal sit among large ranches.
The town grew from one ranch. Edward C. Lasater set up headquarters here in 1895 and built holdings of more than 350,000 acres, persuaded the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway to reach his land in 1904, and founded Falfurrias at the railhead that year. His creamery opened in 1909 with Jersey cattle, and Falfurrias butter was well known by the 1920s. Two years after the county was formed, Jim Hogg County was carved out of it in 1913. Our road north starts in Starr County, and we also work throughout Hidalgo County along the other end of US-281.
Between Brooks County and our Rio Grande City base
From Falfurrias, drive south on US-281 to Rachal, then follow FM 755 southwest through La Gloria into Rio Grande City, about 90 minutes in all.
Typical drive: about 90 min to Falfurrias, the county seat (~82 mi)

My deer cooler in Brooks County stopped cooling during the season. What should I do first?
Keep the door shut, check the breaker and the cooler's controller display, and note the inside temperature. If it keeps climbing, move meat to iced chests while you wait. Call us right away with the equipment type and what you checked. The drive to Brooks County runs up US-281 through the Border Patrol checkpoint south of Falfurrias, so we will tell you honestly how soon we can reach the camp.
Is it worth repairing an old ranch-house air conditioner out here?
It depends on the system's age, the refrigerant it uses and the condition of the coils. A unit that runs on R-22 faces scarce, reclaimed-only refrigerant, and coils worn by the sand that blows across Brooks County lose efficiency. We test the system, explain the repair against replacement, and let you decide with the full picture.
Do you work in Falfurrias itself, or only on ranches?
Both, by appointment. Falfurrias had 4,609 residents at the 2020 census and holds most of the county's homes and businesses. The town counted 6,712 people back in 1950, so a good share of its housing is older. We group in-town calls with ranch and camp visits so one trip up US-281 covers several stops.
