HVAC & AC Repair in Las Lomas, TX

Las Lomas sits on low caliche hills about 10 minutes east of our Rio Grande City shop, and the dust those hills throw up is the first thing we check on every AC there.

Las Lomas is one of the closest communities to our shop, roughly 5 miles and about 10 minutes east of central Rio Grande City, and we work there often. It is also the largest census-designated place near town, with 3,054 people counted in 2020, packed into about 0.4 square miles. The name means "the hills," and it fits: homes sit on low caliche rises where any breeze lifts fine, pale dust. That dust is the single biggest reason air conditioners in Las Lomas lose cooling, and the reason AC coil cleaning is the service we recommend most here.

A 10-minute run over the hills: how Las Lomas calls work

Being this close changes how we can help. A Las Lomas call can often be slotted in the same day, between other jobs east of the city, when the schedule allows. Most visits start outdoors because that is where the trouble usually is.

The technician first looks at the condenser coil. If the fins are matted with dust, pressures and amp draw will be off, and no amount of refrigerant will fix that. Next come the capacitor and contactor, the fan motor, and the drain line inside. On manufactured homes we also look under the skirting at the ducts.

When cleaning is the fix, we shut off power, lift the fan off the top, and rinse the coil from the inside out with a coil cleaner, then check temperatures again before leaving. Repairs that need a part we do not carry get scheduled right away.

Caliche dust, small lots and annexation edges: the Las Lomas risk profile

Starr County gets only about 22 inches of rain a year, so the ground stays dry for long stretches. A 2011 CNN report on Las Lomas described dusty, unpaved streets along with residents gaining basic services, and dust is still part of daily life on the hills. Outdoor units sitting near the ground pull that dust straight into their coils.

Housing in Las Lomas is a mix of manufactured homes and owner-built block or frame houses, many on small lots. Package units on manufactured homes breathe air close to the dirt, so their filters and coils clog even faster. Additions built later often have no ducts, and they are usually cooled by a window unit or a single ductless head.

The community also has an unusual history. It first appeared as a census-designated place in 2000, and part of it was annexed into Rio Grande City before the 2010 count, which is why its boundary sits right against the city.

Census estimates for 2024 also describe a young, owner-heavy community, with a median age under 30 and roughly four in five homes owner-occupied. Owners here are the ones paying for a repair or a new unit, so we show the coil readings and amp draw that back up whatever we recommend.

What do homes on the Las Lomas hills need from an AC contractor?

Dust control comes first, then the repairs and installs that keep manufactured and block homes cool.

What Las Lomas customers want to know about dust, mobile homes and timing?

How often should I wash my AC coil in Las Lomas with all the caliche dust?

For most Las Lomas homes, twice a year works well: once in spring before the heat sets in, and again in late summer after the dustiest months. If your unit sits near an unpaved road or a dirt yard, check the fins monthly and rinse gently with a garden hose when you see a film. A professional cleaning goes deeper, with coil cleaner and an inside-out rinse.

Do you install AC in mobile homes in Las Lomas?

Yes. We install and replace package units and split systems on manufactured homes, and we also put in mini-splits when the home's belly ducts are in poor shape. We check that the equipment is right for a manufactured home, that the ducts under the floor are sealed and connected, and that the outdoor unit sits level on a solid base. On the small, sloping Las Lomas lots, we also plan where the unit can sit without blocking skirting access or the drive.

Can you come out the same day to Las Lomas?

Often, yes. Las Lomas is only about 10 minutes from our Rio Grande City shop, so it is one of the easiest places for us to fit in a same-day visit when the schedule allows. Calling earlier in the day gives us the best chance.

Do you service both central AC and mini-splits in Las Lomas?

Yes. We repair and maintain central split systems, package units and ductless mini-splits, including DIY-style mini-splits that homeowners put in themselves. Many Las Lomas homes have a mix, such as a central unit for the original house and a ductless head in an addition, and we can service both on one visit.
