When a cooler fails, the clock that matters is the product inside. Our emergency refrigeration repair in Rio Grande City is for restaurants, meat markets, corner stores, produce sellers and ranches whose walk-ins, freezers, ice machines or CoolBot cold rooms have stopped holding temperature. Call and describe what you see. We will be honest about whether a technician can come out tonight or whether the first morning opening is the realistic plan, so you can decide what to move or ice now.

Walk-in cooler not cooling? What to do in the first hour

  1. Keep the door closed. Every opening lets in warm, humid air.
  2. Take and log a temperature with a probe thermometer, in the product if you can, and write down the time.
  3. Check the obvious: breaker, disconnect switch, thermostat or controller setting.
  4. Look at the evaporator inside the box. Is it solid ice? Are the fans turning?
  5. Clear the condensing unit outside of boxes, trash or anything blocking airflow.
  6. Move the most sensitive product (raw meat, dairy, seafood) to working refrigeration or into coolers with ice.
  7. Stop loading warm deliveries or freshly harvested game into the box.

Restaurant cooler, freezer or deer cooler down?

The goal is a box back at safe temperature before product is lost, then a fix that lasts. A warm walk-in is as often a dirty coil in the alley as a dead part on the ceiling, so both halves get checked. The visit can include:

  • Swapping fan motors, capacitors, contactors and relays from the truck
  • A controlled defrost, plus clearing a frozen drain line
  • Condenser coil cleaning when dust trips the high-pressure safety
  • Door gasket, latch and strip curtain checks
  • Leak search and refrigerant recovery or recharge under EPA rules

These are the calls we handle when refrigeration goes down:

  • Walk-in coolers and freezers at restaurants, markets and stores
  • CoolBot cold rooms, where a controller lets a standard air conditioner cool an insulated room much colder than it normally would. Ranches use them for game, and growers use them for produce.
  • Deer and game coolers at ranches and hunting properties, which often sit idle most of the year and then get loaded heavily during the season
  • Ice machines, where we check the condensing side, water supply and controls. Some brand-specific board repairs have to go through the manufacturer's service network, and we tell you if that is the case.

For planned work, upgrades and maintenance, see our walk-in cooler and CoolBot room service and commercial refrigeration pages.

Why refrigeration fails in Valley heat

Summer afternoons near or above 100°F punish condensing units sitting in sun-baked alleys and on roofs. The usual failures we find:

  • Dirty condenser coils coated in dust, grease and cottony debris, so the unit cannot reject heat and shuts down on high pressure
  • Fan motors on the condenser or evaporator that seize after years of continuous running
  • Iced evaporators from a failed defrost, a worn door gasket that lets humid air in, or a door that was propped open

An evaporator coil packed with ice, which blocks airflow and lets the box warm up.
  • Electrical parts such as contactors and capacitors that burn out in the heat
  • Refrigerant leaks that slowly reduce cooling until the box cannot keep up
  • Overloading, especially game coolers packed with warm carcasses straight from the field

CoolBot rooms add their own list: the air conditioner itself failing, a sensor knocked out of place, fins icing because the controller is pushing the unit hard, poor door seals, or a power blip that reset the setup.

Locally, caliche dust and mesquite fluff mat condensing coils by midsummer, and a storm flicker can wipe a timer and stop defrost. When deer season opens in early November, ranch coolers empty since spring get filled in one weekend, and a weak compressor or cracked door seal shows itself. Near the river, humid air through the door turns into ice on the evaporator.

On arrival: protect the product, then fix the box

Triage

The technician checks the box temperature, power and controls and looks at both the evaporator inside and the condensing unit outside. In practice the diagnosis runs in this order:

  1. Air versus product. A probe reading in the product sets how fast every later decision must be made.
  2. Power and controls. Voltage, contactor, controller, and whether a timer or CoolBot lost its settings in an outage.
  3. Airflow. Evaporator fans turning, coil free of ice, condenser coil clean and its fan spinning.
  4. Defrost. Timer or board, heaters, termination switch, and a drain line that can freeze and back water onto the coil.
  5. Refrigerant circuit. Suction and discharge pressures, superheat, and compressor amps against the nameplate.
  6. The box. Gasket, latch, strip curtain and wet insulation that keep letting heat in.

Get cold air moving

Many failures can be fixed or bridged on the spot. A seized fan motor gets replaced, a burned capacitor or contactor gets swapped, an iced coil gets a controlled defrost, and a clogged condenser gets cleaned.

The permanent repair

If a compressor, a controller or a specific part must be ordered, we explain what is temporary and what is permanent, and we schedule the return. We stay long enough to see the box start pulling its temperature back down.

Food safety, logs and insurance records

We are a refrigeration repair crew, not food inspectors, so treat this as general guidance. Texas food establishments are expected to keep cold-held food at 41°F or below. USDA consumer guidance says perishable food should not spend more than two hours above 40°F. Your local health inspector decides what applies to your business.

Keep the temperature log you started, plus photos and a list of anything discarded. If your business insurance covers spoilage, those records will matter.

Food code, EPA refrigerant rules and TDLR licensing

The Texas Food Establishment Rules from the Department of State Health Services, based on the FDA Food Code, set the 41°F line. Many health departments treat cold food held above 41°F for four hours or more as a discard, but your inspector decides.

Under EPA Section 608, refrigerant must be recovered, never vented. An EPA rule in force since January 1, 2026 requires leak repair on commercial refrigeration holding 15 pounds or more of HFC refrigerant once leaks pass 20 percent a year. In Texas, TDLR licenses A/C and refrigeration contractors, with a separate endorsement for coolers, freezers and ice machines; you can look any contractor up on TDLR's website.

What sets the price of an after-hours refrigeration call

  • Timing: a call after closing time, on a Sunday or on a holiday is billed higher than one during the work week.
  • The failed part: fan motor, contactor, controller, compressor, or the air conditioner in a CoolBot setup.
  • Refrigerant: type and amount, if a leak is involved.
  • Coil cleaning needed to get the condenser working again.
  • Access: rooftop units, cramped alleys and walk-ins with equipment above the ceiling.
  • Distance: ranches well outside Starr County towns take longer to reach.

The biggest swing is component versus compressor: a fan motor is often one trip, while a compressor means a part order, a return visit and a frank talk about an aging box. Systems on R-22 or another phased-down refrigerant cost more to recharge, and the leak gets fixed before any charge goes in.

If the problem turns out to be the building's air conditioning rather than the cooler, our main emergency AC repair page covers that.

Why business owners call 956 Multi Service when a box warms up

We build and service CoolBot cold rooms, so we know where they fail. 956 Multi Service was founded here in July 2024 and remains a small local crew that knows what a frozen evaporator or a humming condensing unit points to. Google shows a 5.0 rating from 41 reviews.

Someone picks up six days a week from 8 AM, the line closes at 7 PM, and Sunday is our day off; after hours, leave the business name, town and box temperature for a callback on timing. Same-day repairs are common when the schedule allows. Cash works, so do Discover, Visa, American Express and MasterCard, and financing is there if a dead compressor becomes a replacement.

What do business owners ask when a cooler or freezer fails?

What should I do first when a walk-in cooler stops cooling?

Keep the door shut and take a temperature reading with a probe thermometer, then write it down with the time. Check that the breaker, disconnect and thermostat are on and set correctly. Look for an iced coil or fans that are not spinning, and make sure the outdoor condensing unit is not blocked. Move the most sensitive product to working refrigeration or ice, then call.

How long will product stay safe in a warm cooler?

It depends on how warm the box has gotten and for how long, which is why a temperature log matters. Texas food establishments are expected to hold cold food at 41°F or below, and USDA guidance for perishable food is not to let it sit above 40°F for more than two hours. Your health inspector has the final word. When in doubt, throw it out.

Do you repair CoolBot cold rooms after hours?

Call any time and we will give you an honest answer about whether we can come out that night or should book the first opening in the morning. We set up and service CoolBot rooms, so we know their usual trouble spots: the air conditioner itself, sensor placement, iced fins, door seals and power interruptions. Keep the door closed while you wait.

Why is the coil inside my walk-in freezer covered in ice?

Usually a defrost fault or humid air getting in. A failed timer, heater or termination switch lets frost build until the fans move no air, and a torn gasket feeds it moisture in river-humid summers. Turn the unit off, keep the door shut and call; chipping ice off can puncture the coil.

Should I keep running a cooler that is warm but still making noise?

No. A compressor running without cooling, or a condensing unit that hums while its fan sits still, can overheat and turn a small repair into a big one. Move the product, shut the unit off at the disconnect and call with the reading.
