Ductless mini-splits are the heart of what we do. A large share of our work in Rio Grande City involves ductless equipment, whether that means putting in a new 2-ton system, getting a blinking unit running again or deep cleaning heads that have started to smell. 956 Multi Service handles all three across Starr County and western Hidalgo County.

A mini-split has two parts: an outdoor unit, and one or more indoor heads connected to it by a small bundle of copper refrigerant lines, wiring and a drain. No ductwork is needed. That single fact is why they fit so many homes here.

Why ductless systems suit so many Starr County homes

Plenty of houses in the area were built in stages. A block home starts with two rooms, then gains a bedroom, a kitchen extension or a second floor over the years, and the original ductwork never reaches the new space. A mini-split cools the new room without tearing into ceilings.

Other common reasons:

  • Replacing window units. Mini-splits are quieter, leave the window free and cool more evenly.
  • Manufactured homes. Belly ducts under single-wides often leak or collapse. Ductless heads skip them entirely.
  • Garages, workshops and small businesses. One head can make a shop or office usable on a summer afternoon.
  • Older masonry buildings. In brick and sandstone homes like those in historic Roma, running ducts through thick walls is hard, while a mini-split line set needs only a small opening.

Single-zone or multi-zone: which layout fits?

There are three common setups.

LayoutHow it worksGood for
Single-zoneOne outdoor unit, one indoor headA single room, addition, garage or shop
Multi-zoneOne outdoor unit, two or more headsSeveral rooms where wall space for outdoor units is limited
Several single-zonesEach head has its own outdoor unitRooms with very different use, or backup if one system fails

Multi-zone systems save outdoor space and keep things tidy. Separate single-zone systems cost more in outdoor units, but if one fails the other rooms keep cooling. Head styles vary too. Wall-mounted heads are the most common, with ceiling cassettes and floor consoles available for rooms where a wall unit does not suit.

Installation, repair and deep cleaning

Every ductless job we take falls into one of three services, and each has its own page. Across them, the work covers:

  • New single-zone and multi-zone installs, including units you bought online.
  • Repairs on error codes, leaks, boards, sensors and fan motors, any brand.
  • Deep cleaning of blower wheels, coils, drain pans and outdoor units.
  • Manufacturer warranty checks and warranty repairs.
  • Pads, wall brackets and line-set covers poured or fitted by the same crew.

New systems

Mini-split installation covers sizing, head placement, line set routing and startup. We install single 2-ton units and jobs with several heads at once, and we can install a unit you already bought, including DIY kits.

Getting a unit running again

Mini-split repair covers blinking lights, error codes, leaks and units that run without cooling. We work on Mr. Cool and most other brands, including DIY installs, and we check manufacturer warranty coverage before quoting a repair.

Restoring airflow and fresh air

Mini-split deep cleaning takes the head apart far enough to wash the blower wheel, coil and drain pan, and washes the outdoor condenser as well. Units come out spotless, inside and out.

How a ductless project comes together

  1. Describe the space. On the call, tell us the rooms, the wall type and whether window units are coming out.
  2. Walk the house. We measure each room, note sun exposure and insulation, and find a wall spot for each head and the outdoor unit.
  3. Size and quote. You get a head count and BTU size per room, with the line set, electrical and mounting work spelled out.
  4. Install. The bracket or pad goes in, the wall is drilled, line sets and drains are run and covered, and power is connected.
  5. Vacuum and charge. The lines are pressure-tested and pulled into a deep vacuum before refrigerant is released or added.
  6. Start up and walk through. Each head is tested on cooling and heating, and we show you the remote, the filters and the drain.

Sizing matters more than people expect. An oversized head cools the room quickly and shuts off before it pulls humidity out, which leaves a clammy feel in river-damp weather. A properly sized inverter head runs longer at low speed and dries the air as it cools.

Heating with a mini-split heat pump

Most mini-splits sold today are heat pumps. In winter they reverse the refrigerant flow and move heat into the house, which handles the Valley's mild cold fronts efficiently. During an extreme freeze, output drops as outdoor temperatures fall. If that worries you, ask about low-ambient models or see our heat pump service page for backup heat options.

What shapes the cost of a ductless system?

No two houses wire, mount or route a line set the same way, so pricing comes after a look at yours. The main factors are:

  • The number of heads and the BTU size of each.

  • Single-zone versus multi-zone equipment, and the brand you choose.

  • Line set length and how it has to be routed.

  • Wall type, since drilling block takes different tools and time than frame.

  • Electrical work, such as a new circuit or disconnect.

  • Mounting: a concrete condenser pad or wall brackets.

  • Window-unit removal, with the old openings framed, patched or painted.

  • Refrigerant type, as older R-410A stock and newer R-32 or R-454B equipment are priced differently.

Running cost depends on efficiency, hours of use, your set point, insulation and your electric rate. Because there are no ducts, a mini-split avoids the duct losses that the Department of Energy says can exceed 30 percent of heating and cooling energy when ducts run through a hot attic. Financing is available for new systems; ask when you call.

Ductless systems avoid the belly ducts many manufactured homes struggle with.

Warranties and licensing

Mini-split warranties come from the manufacturer, and terms vary. Some brands ask for registration or professional installation for full coverage, so read the paperwork before you buy. State law puts air conditioning contractors under TDLR (the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation), while federal EPA Section 608 rules govern anyone handling refrigerant. You can search any installer's licence on the TDLR website.

Refrigerant rules are changing too. New equipment has moved to lower-impact refrigerants such as R-32 and R-454B, and a 2026 EPA rule change lets contractors keep installing R-410A systems that were built before 2025. Ask which refrigerant a quote uses, because it decides what the unit will need for service years from now.

What do Rio Grande City homeowners ask about ductless systems?

Is a mini-split a good choice for a Rio Grande City home?

For many homes it is. Mini-splits suit rooms without ductwork, additions built after the original house, manufactured homes, garages and shops, and they are a big step up from window units in comfort and noise. A house with good ducts and an aging central system may still do better with central replacement, so we look at the layout before recommending either.

How many mini-split heads do I need?

Usually one head per room you want to control separately, sized to that room. An open living and kitchen area may need one larger head, or two smaller ones if it is long or gets heavy afternoon sun. Closed bedrooms each need their own. We count rooms, measure, check sun exposure and insulation, then suggest the fewest heads that will keep everyone comfortable.

Do mini-splits also heat in winter?

Most do. The majority of mini-splits sold today are heat pumps, which reverse the cycle to bring heat indoors on cool nights. That covers typical Valley winters well. Efficiency drops in rare hard freezes like Winter Storm Uri, so if you want extra security, ask about models rated for low outdoor temperatures or keep a backup heat source.

Do you service mini-splits you did not install?

Yes. We repair, clean and check mini-splits of all brands, whoever installed them, including pre-charged DIY units bought online, such as Mr. Cool. If a unit is still under manufacturer warranty, we can help check its coverage and explain what the manufacturer will need for a claim.

Can mini-splits cool a whole house?

Yes, with enough heads. A multi-zone system or several single-zone units can cool every room, and many Starr County homes do exactly that after outgrowing window units. Hallways and closed rooms without a head stay warmer, though, so layout matters. A house with sound ducts may be cheaper to cool with a central system.

How much does a ductless mini-split cost to run?

It depends on the unit's size and SEER2 rating, how many hours a day it runs, your thermostat setting, how much sun and insulation the room has, and your electric rate. Inverter mini-splits slow down instead of cycling fully on and off, which helps. Keeping coils and filters clean matters too, since a dirty head works harder for the same cooling.
