A whole house air purifier in Rio Grande City has a tough job. Fine caliche dust drifts in from dry yards and unpaved roads, mesquite and grass pollen come in waves, and humid spells keep the AC coil wet for months. A purifier built into the central system treats the air every time it cycles through, instead of only in the room where a portable unit sits.

There is no single best product. The right choice depends on what you are trying to remove, how much air your blower can move and how much upkeep you want. This page walks through the options we install and how we pick between them. For the broader picture, including humidity and dust sources, start at our indoor air quality page.

Signs a whole-home purifier makes sense here

A built-in purifier earns its place when the trouble is airborne and the house has central air. Common signs in Rio Grande City homes:

  • Sneezing and itchy eyes that get worse indoors when mesquite and grass pollen are heavy.
  • Dust that settles again within days, even after the return is sealed.
  • A sour smell each time the AC starts, coming off a coil that stays wet.
  • A portable purifier in every bedroom, each with its own filter to buy.
  • Someone in the home with asthma, whose doctor wants fewer airborne triggers.

If the dust comes from a torn return or the smell from a clogged drain, fix those first; a purifier will not outrun them. The EPA notes that many home systems ship with a MERV 8 filter and suggests going as high as your fan and filter slot can handle, which is exactly what the static pressure check below decides.

Allergy filtration system design: sizing it to your AC

Start with the blower

Every filter adds resistance. Before recommending anything, we measure static pressure, which is basically how hard the blower is working to push air through the ducts and filter. A system already near its limit needs a low-resistance option like a deep media cabinet, not a denser filter.

A static pressure reading shows how much resistance the system can take before adding a filter.

Match the cabinet to the return

A media filter cabinet has to fit between the return duct and the air handler, sized to the system's airflow. In tight attics or closets, we sometimes rework the return to make room.

A deep pleated filter offers much more surface area than a standard one-inch filter.

Stop air from sneaking around

A gap around the filter or a leaky return box lets dusty air skip filtration altogether. Sealing those gaps is part of the install. Returns pulling in attic air may need duct sealing first.

Think about fan run time

A built-in purifier only works when air moves. Long AC cycles do most of the work in summer. Running the fan constantly cleans more air, but in humid weather it can blow moisture off the wet coil back into the house, so we help you balance the two.

Homes cooled only by ductless units do not have a central return, so these systems do not apply. Keeping the indoor heads clean through mini-split cleaning and using a portable HEPA unit is the practical route there.

Can a UV light for your AC keep the coil clean?

Coils stay wet most of the year here, and wet, dark surfaces are where mold and slime start. A UV-C lamp mounted to shine on the coil and drain pan runs whenever the system has power. It is a maintenance tool for the coil, not a room air cleaner, and that distinction matters when comparing products. Lamps sold to "sterilize" air as it rushes by get only a split second of exposure, which is why we point people toward coil-facing models.

UV safety

UV-C light can injure eyes and skin. Lamps should be wired so they shut off when the cabinet is opened, and no one should look at a lit bulb.

Coil-facing UV lamps run continuously to keep the wet coil surface and drain pan from growing mold.

If the coil is already coated, it should be cleaned first; see AC coil cleaning. A UV lamp also will not help a drain line that clogs or a pan that overflows, so those get checked during the same visit. Households that notice a sour smell each spring when the AC starts up again are often the ones who get the most from a coil lamp.

Air purifier installation day

  1. Confirm the plan. We recheck the air handler, return and power source.
  2. Install. A filter cabinet goes in on the return side; a UV lamp or electronic air cleaner is mounted and wired.
  3. Seal. Cabinet joints and any return gaps get mastic or foil tape.
  4. Test. Static pressure is measured again and compared with the first reading.
  5. Walk-through. You see how to change the filter or check the lamp, and what the maintenance schedule is.

Most installs take part of a day. Projects that need return-duct changes can take longer.

Why choose 956 Multi Service for the install

We fit the purifier to your blower instead of selling one model to every house. 956 Multi Service dates to July 2024 here in Starr County, and 41 Google reviewers have left an average of 5.0, many praising clean installations and fair prices. You will see the before-and-after static pressure numbers. When there is an opening, an install can often go in on the day of your call. Lines are open six days, 8 AM through 7 PM, closed Sunday, and payment can be cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover or financing.

Purifier cost factors and long-term care

Price depends on:

  • The type of purifier and its size.
  • Return duct changes needed to fit a cabinet.
  • Electrical work for UV lamps or electronic air cleaners.
  • Where the air handler sits, since a cramped attic takes longer than a hall closet.
  • Replacement media, cells and bulbs over the years, which are worth comparing up front.

Electronic air cleaner cells need regular washing to keep working.

Equipment carries the manufacturer's warranty, and keeping it means following the maker's maintenance schedule and registering the product when the maker asks for it. During dusty, dry stretches, check media filters more often than the box suggests. A filter that looks gray across its whole face is done, whatever the calendar says. Electronic cells that are left dirty stop catching particles and can start to make a crackling sound, which is a reminder to wash them.

Ozone limits, UV safety and licensing rules for air cleaners

The most widely used benchmark for ozone comes from the California Air Resources Board: indoor air cleaners sold there must emit under 0.050 ppm of ozone, measured by the UL 867 method. Units using only mechanical filtration are exempt from that test, which is one more reason media cabinets are our default. UV-C lamps should have a door switch or interlock so the bulb shuts off when the cabinet is opened, and spent bulbs go back per the maker's disposal instructions. Wiring a lamp or electronic cleaner into an air handler is A/C work, which Texas licenses through TDLR; you can confirm any installer's licence on TDLR's website.

What should you know before adding an air purifier to your AC?

Do whole-home air purifiers help with allergies?

They can reduce airborne pollen, dust and pet dander that pass through the return, which many allergy sufferers notice. They only clean air that moves through the system, so fan run time matters, and they do little for allergens that settle into carpets and bedding. Sealed returns and humidity control help them work better. For asthma or severe allergies, ask your doctor which triggers to target.

Will a thicker filter hurt my AC's airflow?

A thick media filter usually restricts air less than a thin one with the same rating, because its pleats spread the air over far more surface. The real risk is forcing a dense high-MERV one-inch filter into a slot sized for a basic filter. We take a static pressure reading before and after installation so the blower is not starved for air.

Do UV lights stop mold on the coil?

A UV-C lamp aimed at the coil and drain pan, running continuously, helps keep those wet surfaces from growing mold and slime. It works best on a coil that has been cleaned first, and the bulb has to be replaced on the maker's schedule. It does not fix a clogged drain line or high humidity, and it does far less to air rushing past it.

Do electronic air cleaners or ionizers give off ozone?

Some do. Electronic air cleaners and ionizers charge particles with high voltage, and that can create ozone, a lung irritant. California caps ozone from indoor air cleaners at 0.050 ppm and certified models say ARB Certified on the box, which is a useful check even in Texas. Some makers also validate to UL 2998, a stricter zero-ozone test. Media filters and coil UV lamps do not raise this question.
