Escobares is a young city with old roots, and we serve all of it from Rio Grande City, about 12 miles and 20 minutes east along US-83. It became a city in 2005, built from pieces of the former Escobares, Garceño and North Escobares census areas, and it now fills the highway stretch between Garceño and Roma. Many homes here are solid concrete block, often added onto over the years, and plenty still rely on a window unit in each room. Those houses are among the best candidates in Starr County for a switch to ductless mini-splits, which cool room by room without tearing open walls for ducts.

Which upgrades make the most sense in Escobares?

For most Escobares homes the conversation is about swapping window units for a better system, then keeping it running through the summer.

Ductless Mini-Splits in Escobares

Escobares block homes that grew from two or three rooms into wings and second kitchens were built without ducts, so a ductless system is the most common way to cool the whole house evenly.

AC Financing in Escobares

Replacing three or four window units with one multi-zone system is a big purchase for an Escobares household, so lender financing can spread it out; ask about terms during the estimate.

Once an Escobares home switches to ductless heads, they run most of the year in block rooms that stay warm at night, and a yearly deep wash keeps the blower wheel and coil clear of mold.

Block walls, window units and the Roma–Garceño stretch of US-83

A Texas House resolution honoring the city places Escobares between the Rio Grande and US-83, about a mile east of Roma, and traces its land to a 1767 Spanish grant called Rancho Santa Gertrudis, accepted by José María Escobar y Rocha. The families who built here kept building. Houses that began as two or three block rooms have grown wings and second kitchens, and each new room usually got its own window unit.

That pattern creates a familiar set of problems. Window units leak air around their frames, run loud, and cool only the spot right in front of them. Block walls soak up afternoon sun and keep radiating it after dark, so bedrooms stay warm late into the night. Electrical circuits that were fine for one unit get strained when four are running.

A mini-split answers most of that. A multi-zone outdoor unit can feed several heads, each sized to its room, and the line sets pass through one small hole per head. Where an Escobares home has a usable attic, a central AC installation is the other route.

How an install visit in Escobares runs from our Rio Grande City shop

The first visit is an estimate. A technician measures each room, notes which walls face west, checks the electrical panel for space and capacity, and finds a spot for the outdoor unit. In tight side yards that may be a wall bracket rather than a pad.

On install day the crew removes the old window units, closes the openings, mounts the heads, drills the line-set holes, sets the outdoor unit and runs a disconnect. Then the system is pressure-tested, evacuated, charged and started, and we show you how to use the remote and clean the filters. One-room installs often finish in a day; larger multi-zone jobs may take longer.

If the budget is the hold-up, AC financing is available. Terms come from the lender, so ask during the estimate.

A fast-growing city with a fire station, a school district and two ZIPs

The census shows how fast Escobares has changed: 1,188 residents in 2010 and 2,588 in 2020, partly because of boundary growth after incorporation. The city opened its first fire station in August 2011. Students attend Roma ISD, and addresses use either the 78584 or 78582 ZIP code. Next door, Roma has the historic district, while Garceño sits on the eastern edge toward our shop.

The whole city covers only about 2.7 square miles at roughly 180 feet above sea level, so most addresses sit a few minutes off US-83, and arrival time stays close to the 20-minute highway drive. Census estimates for 2024 put the median age near 30: a young population, often in homes that keep gaining rooms and the window units that come with them.

Questions Escobares residents bring up before an AC upgrade?

Can you replace the window units in my Escobares home with a mini-split?

Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do there. We look at each room's size, sun exposure and how you use it, then suggest a single-zone or multi-zone system. The old window units come out, the openings are closed, and each head gets a small line-set penetration through the block wall. The result is quieter and usually more efficient.

Do you offer financing for a new AC in Escobares?

Financing is available for new AC and mini-split systems. Terms and approval depend on the lender, so we cannot quote rates or monthly payments here. Ask when you request an estimate and we will explain how to apply. About two in three Escobares homes are owner-occupied, by Census estimates, so the question usually comes from the family that will live with the system for years. We also accept cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover.

How soon can you get to Escobares when my AC quits?

Escobares is about 12 miles west of our Rio Grande City shop on US-83, roughly a 20-minute drive. A morning call frequently means a visit that same afternoon, though it depends on how full the day already is. In extreme heat, move to the coolest room, keep blinds closed and drink water while you wait.
