Hidalgo County is the next county east of our home in Starr County, and its western line crosses US-83 just west of Sullivan City. Edinburg, the county seat, is about 50 minutes and 48 miles from our Rio Grande City office, and most of the county's cities sit between 40 minutes and a little over an hour away. That range shapes how we serve Hidalgo County: AC installation, maintenance, new-construction work and commercial service are planned and booked ahead, and repairs get an arrival window rather than a promise of minutes. The county counted 870,781 residents in 2020 and about 914,820 by the 2024 estimate, the largest population in the Valley.

How do we cover 1,583 square miles from the Starr County line?

We work from west to east. Towns closest to us, such as La Joya, Sullivan City and Palmview, sit roughly 30 to 45 minutes away and are the easiest to fit into a day's route. The core cities follow: Mission and Alton at about 50 minutes, then McAllen, Edinburg, Pharr and Hidalgo at roughly an hour.

Farther east, San Juan and Alamo run a little over an hour, and towns such as Donna, Weslaco, Mercedes, Progreso, Elsa, Edcouch and Mila Doce take longer still. We schedule those as planned visits and group nearby addresses on the same trip.

New subdivisions from Alton to Edinburg

Growth defines much of the county. Alton alone went from 18,198 residents in 2020 to roughly 22,900 by 2024, and new subdivisions stretch across the middle of the county toward Edinburg. Those homes need new-construction HVAC done right the first time, followed by a first tune-up within a year or two of move-in.

The older county looks different. Citrus-era streets in Mission, border-town homes in Hidalgo, dense neighborhoods in San Juan and owner-built houses in the western colonias each bring their own issues, from tired ductwork to rooms added without any cooling. Winter-Texan parks in Mission and Alamo add park models and mobile homes, and McAllen and Pharr hold a large share of the Valley's commercial buildings.

Colonias are a large part of that picture. The state's colonia list, drawn from Texas Water Development Board reporting, names 937 colonias in Hidalgo County as of January 2024, the most of any Texas county, and a 2014 Secretary of State assessment put their population near 150,000. Homes there are often built in stages by the owner, with a manufactured home or block house at the core and rooms added over the years. That mix usually calls for a ductless mini-split in the newer rooms, a check of the electrical service before any new equipment goes in, and an honest talk about replacing tired window units.

County lines, highways and refuges

Hidalgo County was established on January 24, 1852, and named for Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. It borders Starr County to the west, Cameron and Willacy to the east, Kenedy to the northeast and Brooks to the north. Its main arteries are I-2 and US-83 running east to west, and I-69C with US-281 running north to south, with SH 107, SH 186 and SH 495 crossing between. Along the river, Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge and parts of the Lower Rio Grande Valley refuge protect native brush and forest. The county anchors the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission metro area, which is joined with our own Starr County in a combined statistical area. Heavy rain from Hurricane Hanna flooded parts of both counties in July 2020.

Questions about our coverage across Hidalgo County?

Do you serve the eastern side of Hidalgo County, such as Weslaco or Mercedes?

Yes, but those towns are the farthest from our Rio Grande City base, so we book them as planned visits such as installs, maintenance and scheduled repairs. When a quick arrival matters most on that side of the county, a company based closer to you may get there first.

Which parts of Hidalgo County can you reach most easily?

The western side, closest to Starr County. Sullivan City, La Joya, Peñitas and Palmview are well under an hour away, Mission and Alton are about 50 minutes, and McAllen and Edinburg are close to an hour. Travel time grows as you move east past Pharr and San Juan.

Can several homes or units in Hidalgo County be grouped on one trip?

Yes, and it is the most efficient way to use a visit from Starr County. Landlords, park managers and business owners with several systems can book them together, and neighbors in the same area can schedule maintenance on the same day. Winter-Texan parks in Mission and Alamo and rows of rentals in the older parts of McAllen and Pharr are the usual places where several units line up on one route.
